Wood 'n' Hive
Wood’n’Hive Honey is a business venture of SPR Consulting and Ventures Ltd. Owned and operated by Heather and Alex Crouse. Alex has been a beekeeper since 2008, as a result of entering the blueberry business following hurricane Jaun which totally destroyed the wood lot on the family farm in Stewiacke Nova Scotia. As the trees were cleared, low bush blueberries appeared, and the decision was made to allow the blueberries to establish in selected areas. Pollination was critical to the production of blueberries, so 12 hives were created to ensure that there was a source of pollinators.
Following Alex’s 30-year career in sales and marketing, the decision was made to expand the beekeeping operation and to offer pollination services and honey products out of a location in Port Williams.
A local property was secured for the establishment of a workshop, warehouse and honey house, which today includes a small retail shop. The 2016 expansion to 85 hives allowed us to get a better feel for managing our bees and testing our products in the market place.
Today we manage in excess of 150 colonies located in 8 apiaries located in Kings, Hants and Colchester counties. In addition to our own colonies, we collect honey from an additional 60 hives from another local beekeeper.
